• Use of potable water for construction. Ordinary water has some impurities like alkali, salts and other foreign solvents. Some of them reacts with building materials like cement, bricks, paint material etc and reduces the strength of material in one or other way.Therefore, use of potable water increases the life of structure.

• Use of Portland Pozzolana Cement. This cement is also known as PPC cement and is readily available in market. The advantage of this cement is that it is based on pozzolanic material which are inert in nature, hence it is cheaper and requires less frequent curing. This cement can be used for all type of Residential ,Hospital, Institutional buildings etc with confidence except some special Structures like warehouses, chimneys,refineries, bridges etc.

• Use of Good Quality and proper sized cover blocks. Cover blocks are pre-casted or pre-fabricated pieces of concrete or pvc material of various sizes.These are fixed to reinforcement before fixing of formwork or shuttering in place. This facilitates access of concrete around the outer edges of reinforcement and thereby make the reinforcement unexposed from outside and increase its life.The thickness of cover block shouldn't be less than 1/2" in any case and it depends on the type of structural element, environmental conditions etc.

• Use of Leak-proof shuttering frames. The frames should have as fewer joints as possible for columns, walls, slabs etc. Joints should be sealed with shuttering foams or alternatively by tapes etc,if any, to avoid the leakage of cement paste from concrete which binds the ingredients altogether.

• Keep an eye on the Verticality of structure. In rural areas, it is observed that the verticality of structural elements especially of columns and R.C.C. walls are not taken care of or neglected. This results in structural cracks through the affected location and thereby increases the cost of strengthening of structure and maintenance.
